
The Kenneth Anderson Nature Society (KANS) has written a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and general secretary Rahul Gandhi urging them to allow a young leader to head the ministry of environment and forests. Hari Somashekar, director of publicity and awareness of KANS, said the golden period for Indian Forests was in 1970-90, when Project Tiger was launched and enforced under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. But after Indira Gandhi's death, India's wildlife had taken a downward trend . "Today, we are faced with the bleak scenario of dwindling forests. Not a day passes without an animal being poached or wildlife habitat being encroached upon. "There is a lot of cheer for a stable and young government. While this augurs good for the future of India, it will be sad if this freshness and integrity is not infused into the ministry," the letter said....
