Walk to protect wildlife habitat TIMES NEWS NETWORK  Bangalore: More than 1,500 wildlife enthusiasts, officials of various government departments, school students, teachers, members of NGOs and nature lovers participated at a walk from Vidhana Soudha to Lalbagh on Saturday to mark the 54th Wildlife Week.      The idea was to create awareness about wildlife conservation. The event was organized by the forest department. Many participants dressed up as animals and carried placards and pictorial messages to spread awareness about saving habitat. Models of animals in a jungle were displayed in an open truck.      After flagging off the event, chief minister B S Yeddyurappa said the state’s rich biological diversity has been subjected to heavy onslaught by poaching, illegal trade and deforestation. He pointed out that extinction of species can have a devastating impact on the nature and result in disastrous consequences. Conservation is needed not only for ethical reasons, but also for survival, he said. “We need to conserve and develop, which requires support, participation and public vigil,’’ he added.  Other events on Wildlife Week  NGO Kenneth Anderson Nature Society did its bit to spread awareness about wildlife habitat conservation by handing out awareness pamphlets in Bandipur National Park. Vanya Jeevi Samrakshana Vedike recently conducted painting, debate and essay competitions. Around 16 schools participated.
